Best Places to Visit in Iceland

Iceland boasts a multitude of incredible places to visit, each offering a unique and awe-inspiring experience. The Golden Circle, a popular route, takes you to three remarkable destinations. First, Thingvellir National Park presents a geological wonder where you can witness the tectonic plates pulling apart, along with the historic site of Iceland’s first parliament. Next, Geysir geothermal area showcases bubbling hot springs and the spouting geyser, Strokkur. Concluding the circuit is the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall, a powerful and beautiful natural spectacle.

Venturing to the southern coast, you’ll encounter the stunning Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls, and then the black sand beaches of Reynisfjara, surrounded by basalt columns and dramatic sea stacks. Continue eastward to Vatnajokull National Park, home to Europe’s largest glacier and a wonderland of ice caves, glacier lagoons, and icebergs at Jokulsarlon.

Iceland Culture

Icelandic culture is deeply rooted in a rich tapestry of history, nature, and a strong sense of community. The country’s isolated location in the North Atlantic has allowed for the preservation of unique cultural traditions and practices. The sagas, ancient literary works dating back to the 13th century, are the cornerstone of Icelandic culture, portraying the heroic deeds, mythology, and social norms of the early settlers. These sagas have had a profound influence on Icelandic identity and continue to be celebrated through literature, arts, and storytelling.

Iceland’s breathtaking natural landscapes, with their glaciers, geysers, and rugged coastlines, significantly shape the culture. The deep connection to nature is evident in Iceland’s environmental awareness and sustainability efforts. The Icelandic language, closely related to Old Norse, plays a pivotal role in preserving cultural heritage, and it remains relatively unchanged over the centuries. Music and literature also thrive in Icelandic culture, with many internationally acclaimed authors and musicians hailing from the country. The spirit of creativity, innovation, and a strong sense of solidarity are characteristics that define modern Icelandic society, making it a fascinating blend of tradition and progress.

Iceland Food

Read articles about the diverse Jordanian cuisine from fellow foodies and seasoned travellers. Icelandic cuisine is an intriguing blend of traditional Nordic fare and contemporary culinary creativity, often influenced by the island’s unique geography and harsh climate. Fish and lamb are central to Icelandic cuisine, thanks to the country’s abundant fisheries and sustainable farming practices. You’ll find dishes like “Plokkfiskur,” a comforting fish stew with mashed potatoes, and “Hangikjöt,” a festive Christmas dish of smoked lamb. The famous Icelandic hot dog, known as “pylsur,” is a street food favorite, served with various condiments, including crispy fried onions and a sweet brown mustard. Iceland’s natural resources also give rise to some distinctive delicacies, such as “fermented shark” (hákarl) and “fermented skate” (skata), both acquired tastes due to their pungent aroma and strong flavors. For those seeking a sweet treat, Icelandic desserts like “skyr” (a thick and creamy yogurt) and “kleina” (fried pastry) offer delightful options. In recent years, Iceland’s culinary scene has experienced a renaissance, with chefs embracing traditional ingredients and innovative techniques to create modern, sustainable, and delectable dishes. Visiting local farmers’ markets and trying a range of culinary experiences, from cozy cafes to upscale restaurants, is a delicious way to explore Iceland’s diverse and evolving food culture.
